In an under-the-radar release, Nike introduced a second generation Phantom GT as part of the stealthy ‘Renew Pack’ featuring mostly blackout boots with subtle blue Swoosh details.

So how does the Nike Phantom GT2 differ from its predecessor?

Redesigned Upper

The original Phantom GT boot featured ‘Generative Texture,’ a collection of fin-like bumps across the boot’s surface that provided grip. While this texture is still present in the new iteration, the fins have been replaced with the raised v-shaped structures similar to those of the now retired Phantom VSN.

Nike backs up the design change by claiming that the updated texture creates optimal spin, giving players the ability to better control the flight of the ball.

Improved Lockdown

Initial feedback from players and reviewers indicate that the boot’s material generally feels stiffer than the original Phantom GT — but not in a bad way. It appears Nike’s signature Flyknit construction has been altered to provide additional lockdown, working in combination with the off-center lacing system which also creates a cleaner surface to strike the ball.
