Nike Women’s World Cup Jersey Innovation
By WeGotSoccer
When Nike unveiled the kits of 14 sponsored national teams ahead of this summer’s Women’s World Cup last week, eyes were understandably drawn to the appearance of the jerseys.
However, what is truly unique about each shirt is the technology behind them. Nike conducted three years of research prior to designing the jerseys, making supreme fit and performance their primary objectives.
Athletes underwent 4D scanning to capture their exact measurements in both static and athletic positions, assuring that the kits were optimized under natural movements during play. These tests also provided Nike with a heat map of high-perspiration areas so that ventilation pores were placed in the appropriate areas.
Players were also interviewed in an attempt to gather personal insights regarding the nuances of the shirts. For example, a V-neck cut was generally preferred, along with slightly longer sleeves and a looser fit overall.
Cassie Looker, the Nike Women’s Football Apparel Lead, summarizes the brand‘s effort:
“It’s relatively simple to design a kit that fits well during the national anthems, but Nike’s focused on a kit that moves with the body through the most athletic of motions.”
