Nike ‘1971’ Boot Release

Nike is taking things back to where they all started. Today marks the re-release of Nike’s original soccer cleat, originally dropped 50 years ago. Dubbed ‘The Nike’, this shoe was the first to feature the now iconic Swoosh logo that is immediately recognizable to this day.

At the time, Nike (formerly known as Blue Ribbon Sports) was not a major player in the soccer space. Founder Phil Knight connected with La Canada, a shoe manufacturing company based in Guadalajara, Mexico. La Canada had created the Mundial-70 shoe model for the 1970 FIFA World Cup, which served as the inspiration for ‘The Nike.’

During production, La Canada added a lucky metal horseshoe to every pair of shoes, a customary act for the manufacturer. Half a century later, the tradition continues with the inclusion of a horseshoe keychain with every pair of the re-released classics.
