Scientists in the Nike Sports Research Lab honed in on the connection between the ball and the boot as the basis for the GT’s creation. In fact, “GT” stands for Generative Texture, referring to the strategically constructed upper. After two years of development, the Nike design team perfected a pattern consisting of angled bumps that vary in height as well as a surface that is not overly sticky — a vital request from several professional players who were consulted throughout the process. Backed by science and player testimonies, the Phantom GT strikes the perfect balance between feel and grip on the ball.

In addition to the upper, the soleplate also underwent a complete revamp. To better assist with quick cuts and changes of direction, Nike came up with a new Hyperquick system, which includes a more rigid heel for planting, split conical studs, and wide rotated chevrons that enhance medial and lateral movement.
