Ahead of this winter’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar, adidas has unveiled the tournament’s official ball: Al Rihla.

As a FIFA partner, adidas has created and supplied match balls for every World Cup dating back to 1970, and Al Rihla is the latest in a long line of iconic and cutting edge designs.

Al Rihla, which translates roughly to “the journey” in Arabic, draws inspiration from Qatari culture and life on multiple levels. Bold, bright colors are reflective of traditional clothing and goods, while the shapes of the panels are a nod to the country’s vast sand dunes.

SPEEDSHELL

One of the primary innovations of Al Rihla comes in the form of Speedshell technology, a polyurethane skin for increased ball speed and rotation while in flight. This texture is located on each of the ball’s 20 panels.

CTR-CORE

Al Rihla also contains innovative CTR-Core within the ball to maintain shape and maximum air retention, leading to faster and more precise play.

In addition to these advancements, this year’s World Cup ball is also the most environmentally friendly to date, created using water-based inks and glues. The ball will also contribute to positively impacting lives across the world, as adidas has teamed up with Common Goal to support the movement aimed at driving social change.

“At adidas, we believe sport belongs to all, and we have been committed and active in improving access and equity for our global community of footballers. As part of this commitment, on its journey around the world, Al Rihla will support local communities with activations designed to create lasting impact for grassroots and beyond,” said Nick Craggs, General Manager of Football at adidas.

“We are also proud to continue our work with Common Goal, with 1% of Al Rihla’s net sales supporting the movement, together using football as a vehicle to drive social change and meaningful impact for the lives of young people.” Al Rihla is the first World Cup ball in the 92-year history of the tournament which will directly contribute to raising funds to positively impact lives across the world, with 1% of Al Rihla’s net sales contributed going to the Common Goal movement.”

Al Rihla is exclusively available to pre-order now at WeGotSoccer with an expected ship date of mid-April.
